Amidosulfonic acid is an important industrial chemical that is mainly used in the production of cleaners and limescale removers, among a number of other applications. The following are the main applications in which amidosulfonic acid is used:
- Descalers and cleaners: amidosulfonic acid is used as an acidic cleaning agent for descaling industrial equipment, cleaning boilers, condensers and heat exchangers, and removing biological, chemical and physical contaminants. Compared to other acids such as citric acid, acetic acid, phosphoric acid or hydrochloric acid, it is more acidic and therefore more effective. For example, it is about 6 times more potent and up to 10 times faster acting than citric acid.
- Electroplating: In electroplating, amidosulphonic acid is used to adjust the pH of nickel sulphamate baths to pH 3.9 to 4.2. Also, a solution of amidosulphonic acid with sodium lauryl sulphate at 35 - 40 °C is used to activate a nickel layer.
- Sweetener: like Acesulfam K and Saccharin
- Flame retardant: Ammonium sulphamate (H6N2O3S) is used as an important flame retardant.
- Chemical synthesis: Synthesis of sulphamates.
Amidosulfonic acid is used extensively in the manufacture of plastics. There is also high demand from the pulp and paper industry and the dye and pigment industry.
In addition, the acid is the key raw material for various chemical products such as herbicides and flame retardants. A growing field of application is chlorine stabilisation and well remediation.
Application-specific, amidosulfonic acid can also be used as a substitute for methanesulfonic acid.
