Surface technology and surface treatment

Donauchem

Surface technology or surface treatment is the sum of all possibilities to change or optimise the properties of various surfaces. The type of surface is just as important as the process used.

Standard surfaces that are treated in industry are:

  • Metal(s)
  • Wood
  • Plastics
  • Mineral and natural surfaces
  • Glass
  • Ceramics and stone
  • paper
  • textiles and leather
  • and many more
  •

Depending on the type of surface and the desired change or optimisation of the properties, the treatment of the respective surface also differs.

Surface treatment is either mechanical or chemical. For the chemical treatment of various surfaces, Donauchem GmbH offers an extensive portfolio of basic and special chemicals and auxiliary materials.

First of all, we provide an overview of the possible variants, processes and tasks of surface treatment:

 Functions

  • Mechanical protection
  • Barrier function
  • Electrical protection/ function
  • Optical protection/ function
  • Interaction between interfaces
  • Integration of functions
  • Abrasion, detereoration
  • Corrosion protection, hydrophobicity, chemical resistance, permeation, diffusion, insulation, etc.
  • Insulation, conductivity
  • Absorption, light resistance, reflection, etc.
  • Wettability, coatability (painting), biocompatibility, etc.
  • Printing
 Varieties

  • Modification of material properties
  • Coating
  • Chemical or mechanical processes
  • Lacquering, coating, gluing, etc.
 Process

  • Chemical pre-treatment
  • Mechanical pre-treatment
  • Removal or forming
  • Coating
  • Degreasing, cleaning, etching, dissolving, pickling, etc.
  • Grinding, brushing, smoothing, polishing, blasting, etc.
  • Anodising, burnishing, electro or laser polishing
  • Painting, galvanising, anodising, enamelling, galvanising, powder coating, coating

Surface protection

A distinction is made here between:
  • Hydrophobing/Oleophobing: Protection against water or also oil. A water-repellent or oil-repellent protective layer is built up using suitable additives. For example, to protect masonry, monuments, etc.
  • Sealing: also a corresponding protection against external influences such as weathering, UV radiation, chemical impairments. In the broadest sense, this is a sealing impregnation of various surfaces. An impregnation has only limited mechanical or chemical resistance and usually serves as a primer for the subsequent coating.
  • Coating: Coating to build up a film-forming protection. Together with the coating and the selection of the right auxiliary agents (additives), the respective surface can be influenced in its properties and its characteristics can be improved.

Possible damage to surfaces:

  • Mechanical wear
  • Carbonation
  • Chemical attack
  • Chloride/sulphate attack
  • Embrittlement
  • Coating embrittlement
