Chlorine gas is a highly effective disinfectant used in water treatment and the chemical industry, among other areas. Due to its toxic and highly reactive properties, it is extremely important to handle this gas safely. A key element in the safety chain are the chlorine gas cylinders in which the gas is stored and transported.
Legal obligation to inspect chlorine gas cylinders
In order to avoid risks such as leaks, material failure, or even bursting, the legislator prescribes regular technical inspections of these containers: Chlorine gas cylinders must be inspected and approved by TÜV every five years.
To make the testing process easier for customers with their own chlorine gas containers, the legally required inspections can be carried out directly at our
plant in Brückl. The acceptance test is carried out by TÜV.
Why TÜV testing is necessary for chlorine gas cylinders
Chlorine gas is filled under pressure into special steel cylinders or bottles. Over the years, these cylinders can be weakened by corrosion, material fatigue, or mechanical impact. Such damage is often not visible to the naked eye, but can lead to serious safety risks.
The TÜV inspection ensures that the chlorine gas containers continue to comply with legal safety requirements. Without valid TÜV approval, the containers may not be transported, filled, or used.
The TÜV barrel inspection process in detail
The inspection of a chlorine gas cylinder is carried out in several precisely defined steps:
- Emptying and rinsing: The cylinder is completely emptied and rinsed with air.
- Labeling: The cylinders are assigned an inspection status in the system.
- Disassembly: The valves are removed and the cylinder is then filled with water.
- Pressure test: After installing test pressure valves, the cylinder is tested at the specified test pressure (22, 33, or 42 bar).
- Approval by TÜV: Once approval has been granted, the test pressure is released.
- Emptying: The barrel is dismantled and the water drained.
- Stamping: The new test date is documented by the TÜV with a stamp.
- Cleaning: The barrel is hung up and thoroughly washed with hot water.
- External processing: Placement on heavy-duty pallets, external cleaning, rust removal, internal and external drying.
- Painting: The barrels are given a primer coat and then three coats of paint.
- Mechanical finishing: Threads are recut and sealing surfaces are cleaned.
- Assembly: New threaded rods and valves are inserted.
- Leak test: The barrel is pressurized again to check the sealing surfaces.
- Documentation: Labels (labels and new barcode) are affixed and the barrel is entered into the testing system.
- Ready for filling: The tested and approved barrel can now be used again.
